Our Pathologists
“Pathology is fascinating and satisfying. Amazing patterns and colors often hide discoverable clues on the way to solve a complex medical puzzle.”
Jeffrey F. Zacks, M.D.
Dr. Jeffrey F. Zacks has been an anatomic and clinical pathologist and cytopathologist with SaraPath Diagnostics since 2001. He is board certified by the American board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as in cytopathology and he has fellowship training in the areas of flow cytometry and hematopathology. He has special interests in immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology and GI pathology.
Born in New Jersey, Dr. Zacks travelled extensively with his family, and lived in England for six years. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Post college, he was a lab technician for four years. At Tufts medical school in Dr. Rudders’ hematology/oncology lab, he was involved in B cell lymphoma research and worked in conjunction with Dana Farber to deplete allogeneic marrow transplants for acute leukemic patients. He also worked at the Harvard Biolabs in Dr. Holm’s lab participating in yeast genetics research. He considered pursuing a Ph.D., but after a soccer knee injury and successful reconstruction, decided to go on to medical school at Boston University. He went on to complete a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Boston Medical Center. He then completed fellowship years in hematopathology/surgical pathology and cytology. After completing his education, he joined SaraPath, where he has been the head of cytopathology since 2008. Dr. Zacks is a member of the ASCP, AMA and fellow in the CAP.
Dr. Zacks’ interest in pathology was rooted in his fascination with biology and post college lab years. In medical school, anatomy, histology and the biology of disease became his passion. “Pathology is fascinating and satisfying. Amazing patterns and colors often hide discoverable clues on the way to solve a complex medical puzzle. This hopefully leads to an actionable final diagnosis. It is satisfying to help the patient and to be a part of the health care team.” While the physicians at SaraPath work independently, Dr. Zacks says the availability of his colleagues enables them to easily consult with one another on difficult cases and work as a team to find the right answers.
Dr. Zacks enjoys family activities with his wife, son, daughter and cocker spaniel. He also has a keen interest in sports including hockey and soccer.
