United Way Charities United Way was founded in 1887 to combat the issue of welfare and organized a single fundraising campaign for 22 agencies. Today United Way’s goals are to improve education, assist in financial stability and promote healthy living and currently has a network of nearly 1800 organizations in 45 countries and territories.
